3D headset is actually coming out

Sony have officially slapped a November 11 Japan release date on the futuristic-looking visor, called 'HMZ- T1', and it's set to keep the same specs seen earlier in the year.

While the exterior design has changed slightly (it's not so slick now), the headset still boasts a pair of 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones.

The HMZ-T1 includes HDMI input and output (so you can take off the headset and continue on a TV) and is set to retail for 60,000 yen (£481).

Sony's exec deputy president Hiroshi Yoshioka said of the device in January, "As a big gamer myself, I couldn't be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score."

Gabe Newell And Erik Johnson chat about stuff

Gamasutra have done a rather good interview with gabe and co

Interviews like this one remind us why Valve are where they are: “Premature monetization is the root of all evil,” says Gabe. “I think not sucking is way more of an important thing to pay attention to first.” That Valve business plan? Apparently just an enthusiasm for games: “Dota 2 is really a result of Erik and a couple other guys being huge fans of IceFrog. So that’s not like this incredibly, deeply reasoned business strategy.”

Lot’s more gems through the link, such as how Portal 2 sold more on PC than on the consoles, or how they love to talk “enemy design or user generated content” with Doug Church, but haven’t said what the Looking Glass veteran is working on… (Although he got a credit on Portal 2.)

Valve just released a batch of screenshots for CS:GO, so here they are. Click for full size. Some of them seem to have already been released in some capacity, but others are new to me, at least.

Colonial Marines Trailer

There’s nothing official from SEGA, but it looks like this might be the new trailer for Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines, below. It has come skittering out of the darkness on YouTube, but there’s a good chance SEGA will set the flamethrowers on it if this is a leak.

Several screenshots and a recently posted video shows that it functions quite well in its basic form. The mod enables multiplayer AI in the campaign, then gives the player the power to replace that AI character with another player, and even a third.

Serious Sam 3 ..4 Player Split Screen on pc !

For some reason a lot of developers don't realize how many people actually want to play split screen on a PC.

Every time we see a big PC release we have dozens of users clamoring for split-screen play.  Serious Sam 3: BFE will be bucking the trend and including split-screen play on a PC game.

Some claim it might be a play to get more money out of gamers by not including the feature - and it appears that the fake CFO of the game's developer, Devolver Digital, might just agree.
“These Serious Sam nerds need to get a job and pay for their own copy of Serious Sam 3: BFE. We’re losing a ton of cash on this little split screen feature,” added Devolver CFO Fork Parker. “By the way, do they make split screen adult films? Watching four at once would save me a lot of time in the shower. F*ck, don’t print that.”
Serious Sam 3: BFE will support up to four players on a single copy by using a combination of the mouse and keyboard as well as gamepads.  Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Survival, Beast Hunt, and Co-Op are all supported.

Bravo Devolver Digital...bravo.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive !

As rumoured, there really is a new Counter-Strike coming. And it’s not some side-project: this sounds like a major sequel-come-relaunch of Counter-Strike for a new generation of manshoot fans. Valve have just solemnly and officially declared its existence to the world – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, aka CS: GO, is indeed its war-lovin’ name. It will feature new maps, modes, weapons, characters and social gaming features such as matchmaking and leaderboards, on top of assorted updates to tried and tested stuff like de_dust.

It’s due on PC and consoles. Which, I think, means this is Valve looking Call of Duty square in the eye and telling it to step outside.

Not too many details beyond that, but here’s a quote from Valve’s Doug Lombardi:

“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999.
“For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”

Valve are recruiting Hidden Path Entertainment for CS:GO, who you’ll know from the rather good tower defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening.

It’s due in 2012, and the world will get to clap eyes on it at PAX Prime and the Eurogamer Expo later this year.

This, in essence, is Counter-Strike 3, and the first news of it this morning was a huge surprise. It is, it’s safe to say, going to be enormous – but will it be free to play as TF2 now is and Dota 2 is rumoured to be? Mysteries!

There’s a Steam store URL with, basically, this information in a different format, but keep an eye on it for updates.

New Wii U features

Spotted by the NeoGAF forum, the patent shows the controller will feature an in-built microphone and speaker, as well as flash memory. It's worth noting that the Wii controller also boasted a small amount of flash memory and so it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to store a significant amount of data on the Wii U pad.

The patent also suggests the controller will feature a magnetometer, likely similar to that found in the PS Move, which is used for calibration, and it appears to have a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Wii U players will only be able to use one of the new touch-screen controllers per system, although additional Wii Remotes will be supported.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said following the console's unveiling in June that the company's attempting to position the Wii U controller as "the TV remote of the future".

Id Tech: Carmack talks an awful lot

He covers Rage and the tech behind it, what he thinks of the PC as a platform now, Doom 3 code being released, and lots of tech jabber about various platforms and games (even some mentions of Doom 4 tech) that you may or may not understand or care about. Nevertheless do a brew and check it out

Oblivion: Dibella’s Watch

Dibella’s Watch is a new “continent” for Oblivion, which includes “a major city, castles, towns, villages, farms, monasteries and all the good stuff that makes up a Medieval landscape.”

It’s a pretty huge mod put together by a single person, and, while not as ludicrously full-featured as total conversions like the almighty Nehrim, it’s a really impressive piece of work, and worth a look if you just want a new landscape and some fresh quests for Oblivion itself.
